Head Cooling

Birth Injury Lawyers Serving All of Hawaii

Head cooling, also referred to as therapeutic hypothermia or hypothermia therapy, is a type of treatment for birth-related brain damage in a newborn. It is generally considered one of the most effective methods of treatment for hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and is carried out by lowering the temperature of the baby’s brain, which can slow the death of brain cells and may reduce the risk of permanent brain damage.

If your child underwent cooling therapy after birth, or if your child sustained brain damage and head cooling was not administered, the Hawaii birth injury attorneys at Davis Levin Livingston can help. We can discuss the situation with you and review medical records to see if an error was made during delivery or in the treatment of your child after birth. If substandard care occurred, we can pursue financial compensation for your child’s medical treatment and all costs associated with his or her care – for life.

Find out more about head cooling and obstetrical malpractice by calling (808) 400-7517. Your consultation is free and confidential.

How Does Head Cooling Work?

Head cooling is a method of carefully and in a controlled environment, cooling a newborn who has experienced oxygen deprivation. Cooling therapy uses a specially made cap that cools the newborn’s head and lowers the body temperature to approximately 92 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Head cooling is thought to work by:

  • Delaying brain cell death that would otherwise continue to occur after the initial injury.
  • Reducing excitotoxicity, which occurs when neurotransmitters leak from damaged brain cells and negatively affect other brain cells.
  • Slowing apoptosis, or programmed cell death, which occurs when brain cells continue to die after initial oxygen deprivation.
